一鸣惊人
What does 一鸣惊人 mean?
To lose something important because of carelessness, overconfidence, or ignoring warnings
指因为粗心大意、自信过头或不听提醒,而失去重要的人、地方或机会。
Historical origin
During the Three Kingdoms period, Guan Yu focused on attacking Fancheng in the north and was so confident in Jingzhou's security that he repeatedly dismissed warnings about Wu's intentions and pulled defensive forces away from the river. Lu Meng of Wu disguised soldiers as merchants to slip past the river defenses, and because Guan Yu's own overconfidence had already weakened those defenses and left warnings unheeded, Wu forces were able to seize Jingzhou from within. The idiom centers on Guan Yu's culpable decisions: his dismissal of alerts and excessive self-assurance as the true cause of the city's fall.
How do you use 一鸣惊人 in a sentence?
We were so busy trying to win the new contest that we forgot to protect our old project, and in the end we really did "lose Jingzhou through carelessness."
我们一心想赢下新的比赛,却忘了保护原来的项目,结果真是"大意失荆州"。
Common mistake
Do not use this idiom for a loss caused only by bad luck. It is used when someone ignores warnings, becomes careless, or is too confident and then loses something important.
不要把这个成语用在单纯因为运气不好而失败的情况上。它用于一个人忽视提醒、粗心大意或过于自信,结果失去重要东西的时候。
